Chronicles #26: Eating Better on Holiday in Antibes
The first morning
The first morning of a holiday always tastes a little different.
Coffee is no longer rushed.
Bread is still warm.
And suddenly you realise something strange: today, nobody is chasing the clock.
At La Jabotte, mornings begin quietly in the garden. Birds sing, Tya discreetly checks if anyone might drop a piece of croissant, and travellers rediscover a small miracle: eating slowly.
The return of real taste
On holiday, people don’t necessarily eat more.
But very often… they eat better.
Maybe the Mediterranean simply has that special gift: reminding us that simple things are often the best.
A tomato ripened in the sun.
A drizzle of olive oil.
A piece of crusty bread.
And suddenly, that’s a whole meal.
The Antibes market
There is one place where this miracle happens almost every morning:
the Provençal market in Old Antibes.
Under the colourful hall, stalls overflow with fruit, herbs, tapenades, cheeses and fish caught during the night.
You come to buy something…
but mostly to look, smell, taste and chat.
And sometimes you leave with far more than planned.
The lunch that wasn’t planned
The best meals of a holiday are not always the ones booked weeks in advance.
Sometimes happiness looks more like this:
An improvised salad on a terrace.
A slice of hot socca.
A chilled glass of rosé.
And suddenly two hours have passed without anyone checking the time.
The perfect picnic
At Cap d’Antibes, there is another way to enjoy lunch.
A basket.
A quiet beach on cap d'Antibes.
And the sea on the horizon.
A few fruits from the market, some cheese, crusty bread…
and suddenly you have a picnic that rivals many restaurants.
At La Jabotte, we rather enjoy helping guests prepare these little departures toward the sea.
The Mediterranean secret
Nutritionists call it the Mediterranean diet.
Here, we simply call it… eating normally.
Vegetables.
Fish.
Olive oil.
Sunshine.
And plenty of time to savour it all.
The dinner that stretches
Then evening arrives.
The streets of Antibes come alive, terraces fill slowly, and conversations stretch like summer evenings.
You order a dish.
Then another.
Maybe a dessert.
But most importantly… you take your time.
Maybe that’s the real secret of holidays
In the end, eating better on holiday might have nothing to do with gastronomy.
Maybe it is simply this:
Taking time.
Tasting the seasons.
Sharing a table.
And leaving a little lighter… even after dessert.
