Chronicle 31 : Finding calm in August in Antibes

Chronicle 31 : Finding calm in August in Antibes

Even in August, Antibes still has quiet corners if you know where to look.

Every year, the same story returns.

At some point during the holidays, someone inevitably asks:

“What day is it today?”

And no one knows the answer.

At La Jabotte, that is usually a very good sign.

The secret is not escaping August.

The secret is simply stepping slightly aside.

While everyone is looking toward the horizon, all it takes is turning into a quiet street, crossing a small passageway, or pushing open a discreet wooden gate.

Suddenly, the noise of the city becomes a distant whisper.

In the old town of Antibes, some streets seem to have made a quiet pact with silence.

The stones keep the coolness of the night, shutters remain half-open to let the sea breeze in, and climbing plants slowly take over the walls.

Just a few meters away from the crowds, sometimes the only sound is your own footsteps.

Early morning is also a precious ally.

Before nine, the town still belongs to the locals:
a baker opening his shop, a cat crossing the street with complete confidence, a resident watering plants while chatting with a neighbor.

Antibes wakes up slowly, as if the day itself decided not to rush.

And then there is the sea.

But not necessarily the one everyone imagines.

Not the main beaches already covered with colorful towels. Instead, the hidden coves, quiet stairways, or the quiet corners of the Cap d’Antibes, which you often discover when you take the time to stay a few days in Antibes instead of rushing along the whole French Riviera — a bit like I explained in this chronicle about slow travel on the French Riviera.

Even in August, the water can still feel peaceful there.

That might be the real luxury of the French Riviera.

Not absolute silence — it doesn’t exist anywhere.
But that delicate balance between life and tranquility.

The sound of a glass placed on a café table.
A distant seagull calling.
The wind passing through a garden.

Just enough life to remind you that you are on holiday.

At La Jabotte, we often witness the same scene.

Travelers arrive thinking August will be too busy, too loud, too full. Then after a few hours in the garden, after a quiet breakfast under the trees, they discover something quite unexpected:

Calm still exists.

You simply have to know where to look.

So if you come to Antibes in August, don’t only search for the sea.

Look for the quiet streets.
Look for gardens.
Look for the small moments that don’t appear on maps.

Often, the best memories are not the places everyone goes.

They are the ones you discover almost by accident.
