Chronicle #45: Holidays in the sun in Antibes

September rises gently in Antibes

September mornings do not need to prove anything.

They arrive quietly, almost on tiptoe, as if they already know the house. In Antibes, the light is no longer quite the light of July, and not yet the light of autumn either. It lingers, softens, takes its time. From La Jabotte, you can feel that change immediately: summer is still here, but it speaks more gently now.

First comes the silence. Not an empty silence, though.

A lived-in one. The kind made of shutters opening softly, a cup set down in the garden, light footsteps along the path. The cats are often already on their morning inspection, with varying levels of seriousness. Tya, meanwhile, supervises sunrise in her own unmistakable style, half respectable lady, half enthusiastic welcome committee. At La Jabotte, mornings sometimes feel like a very peaceful little play.

Then comes the scent of the sea.

Only a short stroll away, it reminds you that here the Mediterranean is not a backdrop but a neighbour. You can head early to Plage de la Salis, when the sand is still cool and the water feels almost private, like a well-kept secret. In September, you rediscover that rare luxury: beauty all around you, without the crowd. The kind of privilege that never makes noise, yet stays with you for a very long time.

September mornings are also about colour. The sky turns pale behind the pine trees of Cap d’Antibes.

The façades take on a honeyed glow. Towels dry more slowly. Coffee somehow tastes better for no valid reason, which is probably the best possible reason. Even those who are used to rushing through the start of the day tend to slow down here. Antibes has that quiet talent: it takes urgency away from you without even asking permission.

Some guests head out for an early walk before the warmth settles in, towards the ramparts or the seafront, while others prefer to stay a little longer in the garden, watching the day gather itself.

In September, there is no need to choose between movement and rest. Everything feels more flexible. You can read three pages and stop. You can go for a swim and come back feeling as if you have travelled somewhere far away. You can even decide to do absolutely nothing, which at La Jabotte remains a perfectly respectable activity.

There is something tender about this month.

It no longer carries the nervous energy of August, and it has not yet slipped fully into the melancholy of the season’s end. It lives in between, and that is exactly why we love it so much. Mornings feel truer then. You notice a bird calling, the curve of a shadow on a wall, the sound of a gate closing gently. Small things, yes. But those are often the things that create the best travel memories.

In Antibes, September does not try to impress anyone.

It charms in a quieter way. Through restraint. Through light that never shouts. Through that delicious feeling of having a little more of the French Riviera to yourself. For those who love travelling without noise, loving the sea without commotion, and beginning the day without any pointless sprint, these mornings feel especially precious. Simple, sunlit, almost old-fashioned in the loveliest sense.

And then there is that very particular moment when you realise that happiness may simply be this:

a clear morning, a few leaves moving in the garden, the sea nearby, a breakfast that lingers, and the feeling that nowhere else is asking anything of you. September mornings in Antibes are not spectacular. That is exactly why they feel so right. They remind us that there are still places where a day can begin gently and end in gratitude.

In this quiet corner of Cap d’Antibes, we like to think that the most beautiful stays often begin early, in that still-shy light, when the house is waking up and the sea is already waiting just down the road.
